Instructions
Some people find that if frankincense essential oil is wafted under the nose during a seizure that it can halt a seizure.
Ways to do this:
- You can just open a bottle of the essential oil and wave it gently under the person’s nose, so that they can smell it.
- Put a drop on the tip of your finger and wave it under nose while the person is seizing.
- Put some in a glass roller ball container, and roll it onto wrists and the bottom of feet during a seizure. Only use frankincense on the skin if it has been diluted in a carrier oil.
- Hold a roller bottle of diluted frankincense essential oil and roll across the area between the nose and upper lip. Always dilute in a carrier oil.
- Apply to nape of neck. Use frankincense essential oil diluted in a carrier oil.
Frankincense essential oil comes in small vials or bottles, you can typically buy it from aromatherapy shops. In general, the rule of thumb seems to be the more pure (including organic) the essential oil, the better. Some brands are listed below, please feel free to research your own (and let us know if you have others which you have found effective). We have no affiliation to any retailer, however, anecdotally, several brands have been consistently recommended by parents and carers as seemingly more effective than others (I have no empirical evidence for this), however, as someone who has lived through the sleep-deprived, constant anxiety, and research/answers-obsessed life with epilepsy, I wanted to save you some work by listing these here, just to make your life easier:

Further information
Frankincense essential oil is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Frankincense comes from boswellia trees (found predominantly in North African and India). The essential oil is made by steam distillation of the resin of the tree. Resin is a sticky substance which oozes from tree bark and has been used for adhesive and medicinal uses for nearly 4,000 years. It has especially been used to treat inflammatory diseases (some seizures can result from neuro-inflammation), and has also been shown to help with improving memory.
